Should the BNP be banned?

Ahead of the controversial appearance of the BNP on BBC’s Question Time, the Sixth-form debating group travelled to Elfed School to participate in the NE Wales Debating Championship featuring schools from Elfed, Prestatyn, Deeside, Dinas Bran, Denbigh and Hawarden. The two speakers from Ruthin – Viet and Saakar from Vietnam & Nepal  – had been given the challenging task of opposing the motion that ‘the BNP should be banned from any public platform’. This was one of the four debates in the afternoon and  the two students who had been preparing their arguments for a number of weeks performed admirably winning the floor debate. The judges decided that Viet should progress to the next round in Newtown Powys as one of the two individual best debaters. Our two speakers agreed that it had been a very nerve-wracking but valuable experience. Head of Sixth Form – Kath Goodey, who accompanied the students, said that there had been lots of good, heated debate from the floor and the students gave a creditable account of themselves against some strong opposition.
