Going into their first match of the season, having not practised together as a team, and also because many of the first team players were not match fit, Ruthin’s U-18’s netball team were nervous. A few of the current U-16 side were asked to step in. Despite the tension that brewed before the match, Ruthin got off to a good start, with many defensive interceptions from Jing in her match debut and a string of goals from Didi. Going into the second quarter however, the Ruthin side became complacent, as Dinas Bran stepped up their game. The lack of training soon became evident, as match play was lost particularly in the middle third. Passes were poor, and having identified this, the wings, Molli and Lydia did well to make the link between defence and attack.
A pep talk from Mrs Morley helped the team to regroup before the third quarter. Fatigue set in and judgement errors were made; however the team were able to keep up with Dinas Bran’s pace.
Going into the final quarter, the Ruthin side knew it was all to play for, with only one goal separating the teams. Ruthin did well to keep the play going, fighting against strong opposition from Dinas Bran. With thirty seconds to go, a goal from the edge of the circle from Caitlin secured the win. Final score 13-14!
