National Orchestra of Wales
Athena (L6), one of our senior musicians, took part in the BBC ‘side by side’ initiative in Bangor University last weekend (18th – 19th March). Athena and Alvin (U6) were the only two school musicians to participate, as the other student musicians on the course were from Academies and Universities.
Athena says that she was delighted to have the opportunity to play side-by-side with professional musicians from the BBC Orchestra of Wales, which is a broadcast orchestra as well as the national orchestra of Wales. She says that they started by rehearsing three pieces from the BBC Ten Pieces Project, namely Hall of the Mountain King by the Norwegian composer Grieg, Mars from The Planets by Gustav Holst, and Short Ride in a Fast Machine by Adams. The 2-hour rehearsal was followed by a short performance for parents and friends at noon. It was a good chance to get to try out different famous orchestral excerpts.
On Sunday, she was given the chance to perform alongside Keith Hewitt, the Assistant Principal Cellist of the Orchestra, in their Family Concert in Venue Clwyd. She played the first suite of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, under maestro Otto’s baton with the whole orchestra, which was exciting and rewarding. Then enjoyed watching the remainder of the concert in the audience, in which the Orchestra played famous excerpts from the Harry Potter movies, part of the Soundtrack of Doctor Who, and even the theme of Pirates of the Caribbean. She says that the two days were an unforgettable experience.
