Over 40 Sixth Form students have recently started placements with organisations around Ruthin as part of the Millennium Volunteers scheme. This is an award where students receive recognition from the Welsh Assembly Government for giving up their time to help other people. It is something which can be shown to employers and universities as evidence of commitment and dedication as well as helping to develop new skills and knowledge. For many of the pupils it is a valuable experience, as well as being fun and a good way to meet local people and contribute to the local community.
The organisations which pupils are volunteering at include local charity shops, care homes, children's nurseries, cafes, supermarkets, leisure centres and the driving range. Some pupils are also volunteering within school as sports hall monitors and helping with the Fairtrade stall amongst other things.
So far the pupils involved are thoroughly enjoying the experience and there are more exciting placements starting within the next few weeks.
