Iceland – Day 1 – The long day

We set off on time at 6:00am and arrived at Heathrow Terminal 1 at 11:15 for a 1:00pm flight. However we had ample opportunity to sample the local environment until 10:15pm  waiting in the departure lounge for the mechanics strike in Iceland to be resolved. For Percy it was a record – the longest time he has been delayed. The students bore the disruption with great stoicism and tolerance but became increasing annoyed with the lack of information being given – why do airlines treat their customers as if they do not exist? MIR spent what appeared to be an eternity trying to gain some recompense – which amounted to £10 per head so we head for Est Caffe where there followed a big debate on accepting the vouchers which had not been stamped. . Looking on the bright side  it was an opportunity for Chrissie to do some more Biology, for Liz to read a few more lines of Harry Potter in French and for some even more retail therapy. Eventually we departed, arriving in Iceland at 1:15am; after a quick baggage collection we were on our way to the hotel – arriving at 2:30am. Bed by 3:15 up at 7:30 to the view of the hills from the hotel.
