Lower sixth biology field trip

Lower sixth pupils went to visit Talacre sand dunes to study plant succession as part of their required practicals. They wanted to determine whether the distribution and abundance of plant species changed with distance from the seashore. To do this they conducted systematic sampling using a transect and point quadrats to sample the plant species at six different sites. They also measured various abiotic factors (temperature, soil pH, wind speed and light intensity) to determine how they changed with distance from the seashore.

Pupils learnt about the colonisation of bare sand by pioneer species and the progression over time to a climax community. They considered how abiotic and biotic factors over time come to influence the distribution of plant species. We also discussed deflected succession and the impact of man on a climax community.

It was an extremely hot day and all students their deserved ice creams before returning to school. Back in the lab, pupils have been analysing their data and performing statistical tests to determine whether there is evidence for seral change across the sand dunes and provide explanations for this.
