More Mathematical Success for Ruthin School Students

European Kangaroo bounces high in Ruthin.

I received some great news yesterday from The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust informing us of Ruthin School’s successes in this year’s Intermediate Mathematics Challenge.
The Intermediate Challenge is aimed at the top third of pupils in Year 11[F5] or below in England and Wales. The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each institution receives a Best in School certificate. Around 500 of the highest scorers in each school year are invited to take part in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad papers: Cayley, Hamilton and Maclaurin for year 9[F3], 10[F4] and 11[F5]. A further 5,500 pupils from across all three year groups are invited to sit either the grey or pink European Kangaroo papers. These are taken by pupils from over 30 countries worldwide.
Of our 18 students attempting the challenge 15 have been given certificates. Three students have been invited to participate in the next rounds to take place on Thursday 15th March. David Zhang and Victor Chang were joint best scores from the school and have been invited to participate in the Cayley Olympiad and Pink Kangaroo respectively. Murray Whitehead joins Victor in the Pink Kangaroo. All three will also receive Gold certificates. Will Pritchard, Brooke Iao, Samuel Chan, Victor Zhang and Arun Thiru all will receive Silver certificates. Special mention here must be given to Arun who is a year below the normal entry for this challenge. Tom Lau, Foster Williams, Amelia Ding, Caira Williams, Eva Tao, Betty Shi and George Johnston will receive Bronze certificates.
This came on top of the Junior Maths Team obtaining 4th spot in the regional Team Maths Challenge competition held in Birkenhead School so the future is looking very good for our younger mathematicians.
Congratulations to all certificate winners and to the members of the team.
Well Done
