Hawkstone Manor
Pupils from Years 6, 7 and 8 visited Hawkstone Park in Shrewsbury as a stimulus to their English creative writing. They made their way along the woodland fantasy route to such sites as Grotto Hill and Gingerbread Hall, stopping at vertiginous points as the Swiss Bridge and the Awful Precipice, and exploring the caves with information about King Arthur. Pupils climbed the 151 steps of the Monument to the statue of Sir Rowland Hill, designer of the Penny Black stamp in 1840. After being inspired to compose an imaginative story in the past, present and future, pupils trekked through the rhododendron jungle before making their way back to the visitor centre for a well-earned rest and an ice cream!
