Junior Maths Challenge

On Friday 26^th April we hosted our second junior school maths challenge for year 5 pupils. A total of seventy pupils from eight local schools attended. A team was made up of three pupils with some schools bringing more than one team.

Teams were given three challenges throughout the day. A cross number, a treasure hunt/orienteering course with mathematical questions and a mathematical relay race were all held with the intention of promoting team work and excitement in the mathematics they were applying to some different situations than they normally met.

The teams coming in the top three positions after the points were added up were:

1^st Rhos Street School, Ruthin

2^nd ChristChurch School, Rhyl

3^rd Fairholme Prep School, St Asaph

All the members of the teams received Amazon vouchers and Rhos Street and their teacher Miss Davies were also presented with a laptop computer for the school and the Ruthin School Junior Challenge Shield which they will be able to display for the next year.

A week later Mr French, Head of Mathematics and Mr Rimmer, Head of Lower School were able to visit Rhos Street school to present the plaque, now engraved, to the school team that won the competition in an assembly in front of the whole school.

Congratulations to the three winning teams but also we hope we have encouraged all the pupils present to look at mathematics in a different light and that back in their schools they show a great interest in mathematics and problem solving.
